Hair loss - An Overview
Hair loss without scarring of the scalp is a very common condition and affects most people at some time in their lives. The medical term for hair loss is alopecia and it can affect just the scalp or the entire body. Hair loss can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or medications.
Hair may get thinner as a result of predetermined genetic factors and the overall aging process. Many men and women may notice mild physiologic thinning of hair starting in their 30s and 40s. Illnesses, emotional trauma, protein deprivation (during strict dieting), and hormonal changes like those in pregnancy, puberty, and menopause may cause hair loss. In some cases, hair loss may occur with a simple halt in the cycle of hair growth. Major surgeries or traumatic events can also trigger hair loss. However, the hair will usually start growing back without treatment.
Hair loss is typically related to one or more of the following factors:
- Family history (heredity)
The most common cause of hair loss is a hereditary condition referred to as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness. It usually occurs gradually with aging and in predictable patterns — a receding hairline and bald spots in men and thinning of hair in women.
- Hormonal changes and medical conditions
A variety of conditions can cause permanent or temporary hair loss, including hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and thyroid problems. Medical conditions include alopecia areata that causes patchy hair loss, scalp infections such as ringworm and a hair-pulling disorder called trichotillomania.
- Medications and supplements
Hair loss can be a side effect of certain drugs, such as those used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout and high blood pressure.
- Radiation therapy to the head
- A very stressful event
Many people experience a general thinning of hair several months after a physical or emotional shock. This type of hair loss is temporary.
- Certain hairstyles and treatments.
Excessive hairstyling or hairstyles that pull the hair tight, such as pigtails or cornrows, can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. Hot oil hair treatments and permanents can cause inflammation of hair follicles that leads to hair loss. If scarring occurs, hair loss could be permanent.
An Ayurvedic Perspective to Hair Loss
Ayurveda, meaning the science and wisdom of life, is a comprehensive system of health and well-being, born in India over 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda covers practices such as yoga, meditation and natural medicine, all of which work together to create balance and health in body, mind, and spirit. Ayurveda treats discomfort and disease by understanding the imbalances in the constitutions, which, in Ayurveda, are comprised of three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
A traditional Indian medical system, Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to health. It views the state of the hair and scalp as a reflection of an individual's overall well-being and considers the impact of many factors—from age, diet, and hormones to seasonal changes and climates—on hair growth and hair loss. Trauma, stress, and anxiety are also taken into account because they reduce blood flow to the scalp, depriving it of the oxygen and nutrients required for healthy hair.
One of the foundational principles of Ayurveda is that the strength of agni (the digestive fire) determines the quality of nourishment received by organs and tissues throughout the body, including the hair. So, according to Ayurveda, the health of the hair begins with the food consumed and on the digestive strength—as does the health of every other tissue and system. The hair, when it is healthy, reflects the constitution—an individual's unique ratio of vata, pitta, and kapha. And, because each individual has all three doshas in their constitutions, it is common for the hair to express a combination of different doshic characteristics.
If one of the energies goes out of balance, some systems might not work optimally, leading to illnesses. Since the doshas are interconnected and dependent on one another in the balance, the disturbances in one of them cause deviations in others. According to Ayurveda, hair loss is mainly caused by deviations in the Pitta energy, however, hair loss may also be due to some chronic illness or the use of synthetic drugs. Genetic factors are also known to play a significant role.
