Lumbagest capsule is a proprietary ayurvedic medicine that helps in the treatment of back pain from Kerala Ayurveda. The medicine helps reduce inflammation and is recommended as an supportive ayurvedic medicine for muscle pain. It is prepared using a combination of two classical preparation Simhasyadi Kwath and Nirgundi Eranda Prayoga. 

Apart from its use for back pain, Lumbagest capsule is an ayurvedic medicine that helps in the treatment of sciatica. It is helpful in the treatment of herniated disc and helps cure lower back pain.  The medicine also assists in the treatment of spondylitis. Dosage is as per physician’s direction or one to two capsules daily.

 

Kerala Ayurveda Lumbagest Capsule Ingredients: 

Lumbagest capsule is prepared using three main ingredients, which are 

Eranda Thailam

  • This is an oil prepared from the Castor plant, Ricinus communis
  • It is used to balance Vata and Kapha doshas
  • It is very useful in providing relief from pain in different parts of the body
  • It is helpful in the treatment of lower back pain and can help reduce inflammation

Thila Thailam

  • Thila thaila is an oil prepared from the Sesame plant (Sesamum indicum)
  • It is a preferred oil for massage in Ayurveda
  • Charaka, the legendary author of the Ayurveda texts has called it the best of oils
  • It is anti inflammatory and can be helpful in reducing lower back pain
  • It is used to help cure muscle pain

Nirgundi

  • Nirgundi is Vitex negundo is known as the Chaste tree
  • It helps to balance Vata as well as Kapha
  • It is used in Swedana to help reduce pain and inflammation

Apart from these three primary ingredients, Lumbagest capsule uses a decoction prepared for herbs like:

  • Vasa (Adhatoda vasica)
  • Danti (Baliospermum montanum)
  • Satahua (Anethum sowa)
  • Aragvadha (Cassia fistula)
  • Sahachara (Strobilanthes ciliates)
  • Devadaru (Cedrus deodara)

These herbs have properties like anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving that are helpful in treating lower back pain. When used in combination with other ingredients, they are helpful in treating conditions like sciatica and spondylitis. They help in removing the Vata imbalance thus providing relief from lower back pain. 

Pain in the lower back is not exactly a disease. Anyone can experience it during their lifetime. It can happen due to an injury or any other reason. In most cases, lower back pain episodes are resolved easily. The problem is when they become chronic and a person experiences back pain regularly. This can affect the quality of life of a person. While it is believed that lower back pain is experienced more by elderly people, it can be seen in people of all ages. Almost three quarters of people will expect a lower back pain episode sometime in their life. This increases with age, as the disc in the back suffers wear and tear. The pain may be confined to the back or may even spread to the legs. Some people experience relief by resting, while others feel comfortable doing regular activities. When pain persists for more than a month, it is called chronic pain. Ayurveda can be very helpful in the treatment of acute and chronic back pain.

 

Causes of lower back pain 

There are many reasons why a person could get lower back pain. These include the following.

  • Acute back pain can happen due to strain or tear in a muscle. This can happen to overuse of the muscles, lifting a heavy object, etc.
  • Posture is linked to back pain. Wrong posture while sitting can put strain on the spine and can lead to low back pain. People who have desk jobs and work with computers are more at risk of developing lower back pain due to posture related issues
  • A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to lower back pain. People remain seated during their work all day. They then sit in a vehicle while traveling. At home, they remain seated on a comfortable sofa watching TV or using their mobile. All this contributes to low back pain
  • Lack of exercise makes the muscles stiff and this can lead to back pain
  • Those who are overweight or obese are more likely to suffer from back pain. Even pregnant women are likely to develop back pain due to the weight of the baby
  • The discs in the spine can face damage due to rupturing or slipping of the disc. This is known as a herniated disc, where the cartilage presses on the spinal cord or nerves. This can be extremely painful
  • Sometimes, the herniated disc may press on the sciatic nerve who connects the spine to the legs. Here, the patient suffers pain in the back that spread to the legs and can cause a sensation of numbness in the legs. This condition is known as sciatica
  • Lower back pain can even be a result of arthritis where the joints are inflamed
  • When the joints that support the bones in the spine are inflamed, it causes a painful condition known as Spondylitis
  • Another main cause of back pain, particularly in the elderly is Spondylosis. This happens due to degenerative changes where the discs in the spine degenerate
  • Lower back pain can also occur due to certain diseases like kidney or bladder disease, fibroids in the uterus, cysts in the ovary, urinary infection, hernia, fistula, or cancer

Ayurveda’s view of lower back pain 

Ayurveda looks at all diseases from the perspective of the Tridosha, namely Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. In Ayurveda pain is linked to Vata. Of the three doshas, Vata is mobile and associated with movement. Imbalance in Vata can cause pain, including back pain. This doesn’t mean that the other two doshas are not involved. The imbalance in Vata can affect Pitta and Kapha causing different kinds of conditions. 

There are thus three types of back pain depending on the imbalance of Vata. 

These are: 

  • Vata-Vata pain: This pain is mobile just like Vata. The pain is throbbing in nature and changes location. It can be severe sometimes and mild the other times. It is more prominent on the body surface. Cold can increase the intensity of the pain. Heat or warmth provides relief. Muscle strain and overwork as also sedentary lifestyle is an example of Vata pain
  • Vata-Kapha pain: This is a pain that is dull and persistent with a feeling of heaviness. It is confined to one particular area. It starts as a mild pain and then increases in intensity and can go away suddenly. The morning and evening hours are when this pain increases. It persists for many days. Its location is deep within the body. Cold increases the pain, whereas warmth will help to reduce the pain. Congestion, Obesity, Constipation, lack of exercise, and suppressed emotions can cause this pain
  • Vata-Pitta pain: This pain is persistent and localized in one area. The pain is burning and intense. It usually increases in intensity very quickly. The pain peaks during the middle of the day and in the middle of the night. The pain is located in the middle of the body. This pain is different from the other two types as warmth or heat can increase the pain. Cold can provide relief. This happens due to inflammation, overuse of muscles, shock, etc.

In Ayurveda, lower back pain is referred to as Katigraha or Pristhagraha. It is a Vata vyadhi or a disease caused by Vata imbalance. Vatanatmajavyadhi refers to back pain with neurological or muscular causes. Ayurvedic texts have described it as being caused due to Dhatu kshaya, i.e.: degeneration or Margavaran, which is obstruction. 

Ayurveda uses both medication and other measures in the treatment of back pain. The ayurvedic medicine for backache is prepared using various taila or oils. Other herbal formulations are also used. These medicines can be helpful in the treatment of back pain. Abhyanga or massage using oil is an important element of lower backache treatment in Ayurveda. 

When Vata has affected the lower abdomen, it can then lead to backache. In such a situation, enema or basti chikitsa or a mild laxative medicine may be recommended to cleanse the abdomen and thus help in providing relief from back pain. Some other treatments that Ayurveda prescribes are Pizhichil or use of warm oil on body, Swedana or fomentation, and Avagaha sweda or tub bath. 

Apart from these, there are a number of other measures, including lifestyle changes that are prescribed. 

These include:

  • Exercising frequently, including stretching exercises to keep the muscles flexible
  • Doing Surya namaskar and Yoga to naturally strengthen the muscles in the back
  • Avoid sitting for too much time and taking frequent walks during work
  • Posture is very important and sitting straight is very much important
  • Using heat (fomentation) or cold (ice pack) as per the type of pain can help to relieve pain
  • Losing weight as obesity can aggravate back pain
  • Sleeping on a firm surface instead of a soft, cushion bed
  • Avoiding high heel shoes
  • Taking care while lifting heavy objects to prevent strain on the back
