An overview

The immune system’s role is to protect the body from diseases, parasites, and infection. Without an immune system, an individual would constantly fall ill and face a shortened lifespan reliant on medical intervention. White blood cells, antibodies, and other components, including organs and lymph nodes, make up the body's immune system. It protects the body from illnesses and infection with a complex network of cells and organs including the skin and mucous membranes. To carry out its vital protective healing functions, your immune system needs to be strong.

A person with a weak immune system is likely to get infections more frequently than most other people, and these illnesses might be more severe or harder to treat.

These individuals may also find themselves dealing with an infection that a person with a stronger immune system would not get. Infections that people with a weak immune system often get include pneumonia, meningitis, bronchitis and skin infections among others and these may recur with a high frequency. 

The other symptoms of a weak immune system can include: 

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • Inflammation of the internal organs

  • Diarrhoea and abdominal cramping

  • Digestive issues including loss of appetite

  • Blood disorders or abnormalities such as anaemia

  • Growth and developmental delays in infants and children.

The most common signs and symptoms of a weakened immunity include constantly feeling tired, frequently falling ill, having bad reactions to food or experiences (allergies), scabs take time to heal, and experience a host of digestive and joint problems. A weak immune system can have a direct impact on the quality of your health, from hair loss to total exhaustion. 

Causes of a weak immunity

Defects of the immune system lead to increased susceptibility to infection, autoimmune diseases (e.g. inflammatory rheumatism), allergies and sometimes even cancer. An intact immune system, on the other hand, ensures physical health and well-being.The most common causes worldwide include malnutrition, poor sanitary conditions and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Other causes of temporary or permanent damage to the immune system include old age, medications (e.g. cortisone, cytostatic drugs), radiotherapy, stress after surgery and malignant tumours of the bone marrow and the lymph nodes.

Stress: Chronic stress caused by stressful situations or events that last over a long period of time raise the cortisol levels of the body which decreases the production of 'good' prostaglandins. 'Good' prostaglandins are localized hormone-like cellular messengers that support immune function, dilate blood vessels, inhibit 'thick' blood and are anti-inflammatory. Chronic stress can make the body more susceptible to colds and the flu, as well as more serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes and other diseases.

A poor diet: Prolonged and excessive consumption of refined sugars and highly processed foods containing pesticides, chemical additives, and preservatives can weaken the immune system and make the body vulnerable to developing chronic conditions.

Smoking and Excessive alcohol: Cigarettes contain over 4,000 chemicals, all of which are extremely toxic to the body. And, more the amount of toxic substance in your body, weaker is the immune system. Damage to the immune system increases in proportion to the quantity of alcohol consumed.

Inadequate sleep: Without adequate sleep, the immune system doesn't get a chance to rebuild, and it becomes weak. Poor sleep is associated with a reduced number of T-cells, white blood cells that help the body fight disease.

Obesity: Obesity can lead to a weakened immune system because it can affect the ability of white blood cells to multiply, produce antibodies, and prevent inflammation.

Physical inactivity: During moderate exercising, blood flow increases which promotes the process of expelling toxic waste out of your body. The improved blood circulation also promotes circulation of antibodies and white blood cells that are important for fighting off infections.

Excessive use of medicines: some prescription and non-prescription drugs are very toxic and excessive use of antibiotics and cold and fever fighting medications weakens the immune system.

Lack of hygiene: lack of proper hygiene habits exposes your body to more germs thus leading to a weak immune system.

Dehydration: it is vital to maintain a good level of hydration to assist in eliminating byproducts of any illness and help the immune system fight off infection. Dehydration can affect your energy and your sleep, and the ability to get toxins/waste material out of the body. 

An Ayurvedic approach to immunity

With its origin starting from the Vedic culture in India, Ayurveda, for more than 5000 years has been enabling individuals to overcome their illnesses. Ayurveda is not about suppressing symptoms, but about addressing the root cause of bodily imbalances. If the immune system is compromised, it is important to identify and to change course to correct the underlying issues. The Ayurvedic concept of immunity known as Vyaadhikshamatva literally means ‘resistance (ksamatva) against disease (vyaadhi)’. Physical and mental resistance to disease is of enormous significance for all living beings; it regulates both prevention against and rapid recovery from diseases. According to Ayurvedic science, to preserve health, one has to have a strong vyadhikshamatwaor immunity to combat deadly etiological agents. It can be achieved by two means i.e. innate immunity resulting from a general process rather than a process directed at specific disease organisms. Acquired immunity means the human body has the ability to develop extremely powerful specific immunity against individual invading agents such as bacteria, viruses, toxins, or even impure foreign tissues from other animals.

The Ayurvedic concept of immunity is intricately interwoven with the concepts of nutrition, agni (digestive fire), and tissue formation. The quintessence of all the tissues of the body is known as Ojas. Ojas is our vital energy which pervades all tissues, cells, and spaces; it is the ultimate distillation of each tissue combined together and is the main determinant of our immune status and hence our resistance to disease. 

When Ojas levels are low, then the body gets weaker and more susceptible to various infections, illnesses such as ulcers, even cancer. Ojas is the end product of complete digestion that creates radiant good health, stable emotions, and immunity. Ama, the digestive impurities caused by eating hard-to-digest foods or by unhealthy eating habits, creates the opposite effect — it compromises immunity and health. To keep the seeds of infection from sprouting, one must take care to create ojas in the body, not ama. There is a great deal of synergy between Ojas, agni, srotas, doshas, and dushya; defects in either system can lead to immune-pathological disorders, including autoimmune diseases, immune-deficiencies and hypersensitivity reactions.
